Dear Parents/Guardians,
My name is Ms. Lewis. I am the K-8 counselor at Thompson Falls Elementary. My job is to assist the students in any academic, social, and personal development. Any parent/guardian or staff member or student may make a referral.
A few things for you and your student to be aware of:
- Confidentiality - what is said between your student and myself is private. I will go over confidentiality in an age appropriate way with your student. There are a few exceptions:
- A student is at risk of harming themselves or others. Every effort will be made to work with you and inform you first.
- Any sign of physical, sexual abuse or neglect of a minor or elder is brought to light. Montana state law requires that school counselor to report to the proper authorities in making a report.
- If records are court ordered, the school will attempt to contact you first.
- Working with minors means parents/guardians have the right to be informed of progress. In these instances, the three parties will meet. (school counselor, student, parent/guardian)
- Counseling is voluntary. Students or parents may end counseling at any time without consequences. If you feel your student's need would be better served by a Licensed Professional Counselor, I am able to make referrals to outside agencies.
- Benefits / Risks. There may be both risks and benefits associated with participation in counseling. Counseling may improve my child's ability to relate with others, provide a clearer understanding of himself/herself, along with values, goals, and ability to deal with everyday stress.
Please note these services are not intended as a substitute for medication, psychological counseling or diagnosis, which are not the responsibility of the school.
- Along with classroom teaching and individual counseling, students can work in small group counseling. Small group counseling allows students to work on skills with two or three of their peers. Please note that confidentiality cannot be guaranteed in a small group setting but will be addressed with students prior to each meeting.
Please be aware counseling services are available only during school hours. In case of emergency please contact the proper authorities.
